5 TIPS FOR CREATING YOUR BEST SUMMER SKIN

We all want to make sure our skin looks the best all year round. So how do we maintain healthy skin and create that summer glow? Aurae Skin has curated 5 key summer skin saving tips below...

1. Australian Made & Owned Broad Spectrum SPF

When purchasing sunscreen, it is important that you purchase one that is made with the Australian sun in mind (did you know that Australia has the highest rate of UV radiation in the world?). A European sunscreen with SPF 30+ simply will not hold a factor of "30+" in the Australian Sun - it will offer less protection. This is not due to false advertising, but rather it simply wasn't designed for the Australian Sun. Therefore, for proper protection, always opt for a sunscreen that has been made with the Australian sun in mind.

There is some research to suggest that aerosol sunscreens aren't as effective as the general lotion sunscreens due to their limited ability to expel the required coverage.

We should be applying sunscreen to our face totalling around 5ml or 1 teaspoon and around a shot-glass amount to the body. To ensure we maintain coverage, we need to re-apply once every two hours.

2. Double Cleanse

In summer we lather ourselves in moisturisers and oils, sunscreen (...and occasionally zinc), all while flaunting our best Kimmy K face of makeup. When it comes to the end of the day (or changing from beach face to party face) - double cleansing with a gentle cleanser is the way to go! In order to remove the thicker layers of sunscreen, oils (our skin produces more oil in the warmer months), and undoubtedly sweat - we should pay extra attention to our cleansing technique.

Using a gentle cleanser massage away the days build-up in slow, firm circular motions. Do this thoroughly, rinse and repeat. Your skin will thank you for it!

3. Re-Hydrate

Not only will the summer heat evaporate hydration from our skin, we tend to sweat it out too! This is why we need to pay close attention to keeping our skin hydrated - inside and out. The less water we provide from the inside for our skin, the more the signs of dehydration will show on the surface - so keep hydrated by keeping a large bottle of water next to your desk (or sun bed!) for frequent sips throughout the day.

Given our skin is the largest organ of the body and its primary function is to protect our vital organs, our body does this really odd thing where it decides to provide hydration to our vital organs before it will even consider the skin. Therefore, the amount of hydration we receive from the inside is minimal - so we need to get hydration in other forms.

One of the other means by which we can re-hydrate our skin is a hydrating serum. Keeping hydrated is a two-way street when it comes to skincare - 1) from the inside out and 2) from the outside in! Supplement your water intake with a boost of hydration on the surface of the skin (our Beauty Boost Hyaluronic Serum is the perfect companion!).

4. Exfoliate

Exfoliation is the process of removing the surface layers of dead skin to reveal softer, more supple skin underneath.

During Summer we tend to expose our skin to salty water, chlorine, a lot of sun and loss of hydration. Exfoliation will help us shed the dead skin cells created by our summer activities and has a double action in that it also stimulates the skin to produce new skin cells - reviving our skin's glow.

Being mindful that our skin is on a 28 day cycle - meaning it takes 28 days from creation in the base layers of the skin until it reaches the surface of the skin on day 28 - we should prepare our skin for our summer event calendar 28 days in advance by undergoing a complete body exfoliation on a weekly basis, supplemented by hydrating moisturisers for that natural glow!

5. Moisturise

Moisturiser is a must when it comes to summer!

Moisturiser acts as your skin's support system to keep it healthy, moisturised and hydrated. Moisturisers act to not only penetrate, but creates a protective barrier to help prevent bacteria and other pathogens from entering, while avoiding the loss of water from our skin.

We can always boost our moisturiser by layering oils on top. I'd recommend this only of an evening in summer when we feel our skin needs that added moisture as oils can diminish the efficacy of our sunscreen during the day.

Layer your oil on top of your moisturiser to lock in moisture and hydration and prevent the formation of fine lines and wrinkles from a compromised moisture barrier.

Our Wonder Glow Revitalising Repair Oil is perfect for just that and is a great addition to amplify the anti-ageing benefits to our skin and lock in hydration and moisture.
